Astronomy 16: Textbook

The textbook for this course, which you are all expected to have a copy of or have easy access to, will be "Astronomy: A Physical Perspective", by Marc L. Kutner (Cambridge University Press; 2nd edition; 2003; ISBN 0521529271, US$61.97). Your feedback on the usefulness of this text is welcomed.

Copies of this text will be available from the The Harvard Coop. Alternatively, you can order a copy from an on-line bookstore, a list of which can be found here. Both Wolbach and Cabot Libraries will have copies on course reserve.

In most weeks, a section of the text will be assigned for you to read, as listed in the course calendar. The content of the laboratories and problem sets will be based on the assumption that you have read and understood (but not memorized!) this material. The midterm and the final exam will be based on the material covered in lectures, but obviously a deeper understanding, as can be gained from the text, will likely prove useful in your preparations.

For those looking for a more detailed text, you may also be interested in "Fundamental Astronomy", edited by Hannu Karttunen et al (Springer Verlag; 4th edition; 2003; ISBN 3540001794, US$59.95). Photocopies of some sections of this book will be distributed for certain topics. It is not necessary to own a copy of this book; copies will be placed on course reserve in Wolbach and Cabot.
