Release No.: 04-02 Young Star Caught Speeding For Release: 12:30 p.m. EST, Monday, January 5, 2004
 | The "speeding star" PV Ceph was exiled from its homeland, tossed out of the star cluster NGC 7023 by gravity after a close passage by another star. Evidence for the rapid motion of PV Ceph includes an "exit wound" in the nebulosity of NGC 7023, and the reconstructed path of the Herbig-Haro knots emitted from this young, active star. Credit: A Goodman (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) and H. Arce (California Institute of Technology).

More information on the "speeding star" PV Ceph, including a movie and the presentation at the American Astronomical Society meeting, is online at: http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/~agoodman/Presentations/aas04PVCeph/. |
