Dr. Whipple at his 95th birthday party

At age 95, Dr. Fred L. Whipple is the oldest and most eminent member of the CONTOUR Science Team. Whipple was the first to describe comets as "dirty snowballs," a model shown to be correct when space probes visited Halley's Comet in 1986. The CONTOUR mission will launch in July 2002 to visit periodic comets 2P/Encke and 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann.
