Release No.: 03-11: "CSI" Astronomers Link Gamma Ray Bursts and Supernovae For Release: Thursday, April 10, 2003
 | Artist's conception of the violent blast of gamma rays emitted byGRB030329in the constellation Leo. Astronomers Peter Garnavich (Notre Dame), TomMatheson and Krzysztof Stanek (CfA) obtained the first direct prooflinkinggamma-ray bursts and supernovae by observing this burst with the MMTtelescope at Mount Hopkins. Gamma-ray bursts are explosions so powerfulthatthey can be seen across billions of light-years of space, emitting tentimesas much energy in a few seconds as the Sun will release in its entire10-billion-year lifetime.
