Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMP)
AMP research includes
theoretical studies and laboratory and field measurements, which support
astronomical observations at all wavelengths, directly address topics of
astrophysical importance, and pursue related studies in fundamental physics and
atmospheric science.
High Energy Astrophysics (HEA)
HEA scientists study the hottest, most extreme,
places in the universe, including black holes,
neutron stars, supernovae, and giant clusters of galaxies.
Optical and Infrared Astronomy (OIR)
The OIR division carries out research on stars, the Milky Way, galaxies, and cosmology,
and is responsible for building
and operating the ground-based telescopes and instruments used by all CfA scientists.
Radio and Geoastronomy (RG)
RG astronomers utilize the low-energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to infrared,
to study a very broad range of topics, from our own planet to the radio echo of the big bang.
Solar, Stellar, and Planetary Sciences (SSP)
SSP scientists study the physical processes associated
with the formation of stars and planets and the structure and
evolution of the Sun, stars, and stellar systems in the
Milky Way.
Theoretical Astrophysics (TA)
The TA Division uses theoretical models and computer simulations to
understand a variety of fundamental astrophysical phenomena.
