ATLAS Terminology

ATLAS School Coordinator: This is the teacher at the participating school with whom the members of the Space Geodesy Group at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory will be in touch in regard to all aspects of ATLAS.

ATLAS Team Teacher: Group of teachers at the participating school who are directly or indirectly involved in the ATLAS Projects. We recommend that the team of teachers be as multidisciplinary as possible.

SAO Scientist Observer: The scientist from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory who will visit the school and attend the ATLAS activities during 1999.

Classroom activities: These activities are included to either introduce the information necessary to perform the experiments or to review their outcome. There are a total of five classroom activities scheduled. Two prior to, and one after, the first experiment, and one each prior and after the second experiment. The materials that will be used during these classroom activities will be provided and are described in the following pages.

One class hour equals 40 minutes of instructional time: This time is only indicative. Each school should tailor the duration of the classroom activities to its particular time conditions.
