Observations of nearby supernovae

We use various telescopes at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO) (Mount Hopkins, Arizona) to classify and follow-up bright (< 18.5 mag) nearby supernovae through photometry and spectroscopy. The goal is to identify newly-discovered supernovae and follow-up interesting objects. We also use the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to monitor nearby supernovae via the Supernova INtensive Study (SINS) and the Supernova 1987A INTensive survey (SAINTS) programs.

Cosmology with Type Ia supernovae

The CfA SN group is actively involved in the ESSENCE project, whose aim is to determine the equation-of-state parameter of the Universe using observations of high-redshift Type Ia supernovae. This project is a follow-up of the High-Z SN Search.
