Early safing was required due to the fact that DSS 34, which was scheduled to provide much of the week's coverage was struck by lightning. As of this writing, servicing of DSS 34 still has not been performed due to ongoing electrical storms. The resulting gaps in DSN coverage was greater than allowed by UVCS thermal contstraints in event of and ESR, so the decision was made to safe UVCS earlier than 15 December 2004, as origianly scheduled. Detector High Voltage is ramped down and then turned off, OVI Slit is set to 100 microns, instrument is rolled to the nominal East (35156 Engineering Units), and Mirror is moved to 1.5 Solar Radii with 1.5 mm overocculting. UVCS Aperture Door is also closed 708 steps, Internal Mirror / Occulter Heater set to 100% duty cycle. Internal Spectrometer Heater is not turned on. In addition to "traditional" Hard Safe configuration, all UVCS detectors are powered off. A pause was required after slit, roll and mirror commands to allow for time critical SUMER Science before dedicated NRT for powering down of OVI Detector High Voltage and detector power, and partial closing of the UVCS Aperture Door. FOT use ESR Limit Table, and turn on TSU Substitution Heater (Circuit #84) and set duty cycle to default 60%. Experiment Offpoint, and ESR Flags disabled for Keyhole. ESR Flag disabled at 21:12 UT, 13 December 2004. Offpoint Flag disabled at 21:18 UT, 13 December 2004. FOT begin using ESR Limit Table at 21:19 UT, 13 December 2004. TSU Substitution Heater (Circuit #84) turned on shortly thereafter.
