SOHO: The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory

The 1861-kilogram SOHO satellite was launched on 4 December 1995 to investigate the Sun from its interior to its outer atmosphere where the solar wind is produced. Observations with SAO's Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (large golden cylindrical instrument) have led to a major advance in the understanding of solar wind acceleration. SOHO is a joint program of NASA and the European Space Agency.
