Travel in the Tokyo Area & Japan

Back to front

There are many ways to get from the Narita Airport to TMU. For general pointers, see the following site.

Keio Line
TMU can be reached on the Keio Line departing the Shinjuku JR train station in Tokyo. Click here for directions and train routes. Note that the Keio line is a private line. One way tickets or multi-use passes can be purchased in the Shinjuku station near the Keio line entrance. Click the following links for a map or for schedules. TMU is at the Minami-Osawa station. The International House is building 14 on the campus map. http://www.metro-u.ac.jp/campusmap/campusmap-e.htm

Japan Rail (JR) trains in the Tokyo area
One can get around Tokyo on many of the JR lines as displayed on the rail map. One possibility is to take the Keisei Skyliner from Narita to the Nippori JR station. Then take the JR Yamanote line (in center of map) to Shinjuku. The Yamanote line is a circle line around Tokyo. Then take the Keio line as described above.

Long Distance Trains
If you wish to travel outside Tokyo on Shinkansen, here are maps and timetables for Westbound and Eastbound trains. It is cheapest to purchase a JR Rail pass for the Shinkansen prior to coming to Japan.

Japan Rail Passes
It's a confusing situation to say the least, but a little detective work has made the following transparent: if you're traveling throughout Tokyo and Japan (north, east, west, south), it pays to buy a universal Japan Rail pass. A universal JR pass can ONLY be bought outside of Japan (actually buying an Exchange Order) through, say JALPAK company at  1-888-352-5725 (NYC). Also, you could fill out the form here, and fax to the number on the form.

If you plan to travel only, say in the east or north of Japan, then you could purchase your East JR Pass, upon arrival in Japan and showing your return ticket and passport. Do NOT ask the organizers why this is the case here, but not true for the universal pass.

The timetables for the JR trains can be found here!
Another good one for timetables is here.
